Docs and Denim

Written by Erica Jane Basson

Hey look! Part 2 and 3 on perfecting grunge in one!

So let’s talk about this: The Vintage Denim Jacket and Doctor Marten Boots. A power couple in the world of underground fashion.

The Vintage Denim Jacket is definitely one of my favorite things around. The great thing about them is they’re sturdy, they won’t only last a few months, and they’re like your favorite, trusty pair of jeans. They come in so many different shapes and types of denim. These beauties are available bleached, dipped, patched or even studded up!  Denim Jackets can easily be personalized and can make for a great DIY project. Buy an old jacket at a thrift store, take it home and add your own badges and patches. Go the extra mile and buy yourself a stud gun to be extra edgy. They can be worn in so many different ways. Be indie, be hippie, be grungy, be metal or be girly. Remember that fashion has no rules. This jacket really does go with almost every personality and every style. Just like a parka it can be paired up with so many things, so I won’t even get started with that. Point is, this is a must have item!

Doctor Marten Combat Boots. Or Doc Martens. Or just Docs. I’m a big fan of investing in high-quality, versatile items that will last you several years. So after eyeballing these beauts on Tumblr for several months I decided to scrape my money together and go buy a pair. I haven’t regretted it since. If you scroll through Lookbook you’ll see these shoes everywhere. It’s worn with shorts and skirts and dresses and jeans and leggings, and it’s perfect for both summer and winter. It’s perfect for both boys and girls. It comes in SO many colours and patterns, one could say it’s basically unlimited. Discover your own pair of docs in brights, pastels, galaxy, florals, anything - but the classic black Docs are still the ones that sells the best. To me, style is all about the extras, the little unexpected things people add to outfits to make them unique and stylish and well, you! This is exactly what Docs did for me. I do realize that these boots are not for everyone’s taste, but that is good. It’s very important to have your own staple on style.

Macho Military

Camo, cargo, combats and gold – who said military, was just for the army?

Ladies, and gents of course, the military trend is back. And it acts as a main trend for 2013. This type of collaborated style has been around for a pretty long time. But for this year, designers have incorporated this trend into their collections more seriously. This includes designers such as Victoria Beckham, Michael Kors, Balenciaga and Jean Paul Gaultier. And whatever walks on the runway influences the clothing rails. I've spotted the presence of the military trend in a few shops like Mr Price, Zara and Factorie. This style is also seen in shops like Forever New and Jay Jays, but it’s much more subtle.

Now. What is this trend that I keep on babbling about?

For starters, the colour palette is similar to sombre and earthy tones. The main colours to take into recognition are navy, olive green, black, khaki and grey. Maroons and mustard yellows or pale oranges could work as well. This style includes leather to finish it off with. Metallic colours can be used to add splashes of excitement to intrigue the eye.

As any other trend, a head-to-toe military outfit will create a disaster. Use key garments only, to incorporate this sturdy tendency. When I think about military or army as a trend, I often relate it to grunge. Both trends include the combat boots and the dark, sombre colours. I associate this trend with winter and autumn more than summer. Probably due to the fact that boots and coats are prominent in this style.

Key items to look out for include a vast variety. For starters, camouflage immediately creates the feeling of an army environment. Again, do not drown your outfit in this print. A cargo pant is strongly based on the military trend (Probably due to the amount of pockets). These pants can be baggy as well as fitted. Loose fitted tops, parkas and combat boots cover the basics. Field, bomber and ponti jackets, a classic coat and skinnies are included in this range of choices to incorporate an army style. Bold buttons and several pockets add emphasis. Just remember to accessorize to keep your outfit from turning into a uniform.

It’s all about creating a look that you feel comfortable in. And if you so happily decide to add something macho and army-like, why not?

Pick your Parka

by Erica Jane Basson

So, the parka, also known as an anorak, is one of the best things ever designed. Finally a trend designed with both style and comfort in mind! The great thing about this 90’s military inspired jacket is that it comes is various shapes and sizes. It comes in unlimited colours and patterns and will be available at most stores this fall and winter. I have already spotted a few beauties at The Lot, Cotton On, Factorie and even Mr Price! This is definitely the item to have this upcoming winter!

The great thing about a parka is it’s perfect for any occasion. I often call mine my ‘Festival Jacket’ because it’s great for a gig, a braai, a hike, a day in town, a winter’s day at the ocean anything actually; suited for both indoor and outdoor activities. Parkas can also be easily worn. Throw it over a patterned jumper and a skinny jean. To capture the 90s look throw over a baggy jumper and leggings. Wear it over skirts and dresses, shorts and stockings, long skirts even. Wear it with collared tops, crop tops or t-shirts. Wear it with boots, converse, even brogues or creepers. If your parka already has pattern or print on it, don’t be afraid! Mix and match or just wear over something simple, great thing about a statement parka is you’ll never have to put much effort into making it look cool. It looks awesome paired with chunky scarves and a flannel or denim shirt layered underneath. As you can see there are endless outfit choices!

A big trend on parkas this season is the military style. Army greens and camouflage are everywhere. But you can find so many different kinds to fit your personality. It’s the type of trend that will last past the season and can be worn in warmer weather as well. Trust me, if you go out and buy yourself one of these babies you won’t regret it for a second.

Grunge it Up

by Erica Jane Basson

Hi, my name is Erica. and this is my first post- yay!

I have decided that since it’s autumn and winter stock has already hit most stores that I will enlighten you with one of my favourite styles. 90’s Grunge.

There are three main style items that I want to cover, so think of this as a three part series to your style education. On the agenda: Parkas, Retro Denim Jackets and Doctor Marten Boots. All a must have when it comes to perfecting the art of grunge. Today however, we’ll just cover the basics.

Grunge is a subgenre that emerged in the Seattle area in the 1980’s. Inspired by hardcore punk, heavy metal, and indie rock, grunge is generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars, contrasting song dynamics, and apathetic or angst-filled lyrics. The success of grunge is mostly due to Pearl Jam’s Ten and Nirvana’s Never mind.

So you like the rocker style? You listen to old music, modern rock and roll, and love doing things that are against the social norm? Then this style is definitely for you. Grunge means not wanting to be popular or to be considered a pop icon. You basically drift under popular and as I like to call it, fake society. Music is one of the most important elements of this style, so make sure you go check out old school grunge artists like Sonic YouthSoundgarden and Nirvana, actually anything that stirs up some rebellion.

Grunge kids love their black skinnies paired with a cool band t-shirt. Baggy jeans, ripped shorts and high waists are also perfect. And it goes without saying, that Converse and Creepers are also a great idea. Dark colours are the best to wear, but also colours like maroon, reds and turquoises are popular. Vertical stripes are great for shirts and tights. And don’t forget about leather jackets. Jewelry is essential to the look of grunge, so stud it up! Make up can be all out like grunge queen Taylor Momsen’s or be kept very simple. When it comes to hair; wear a beanie, keep it messy and dyeing it an unconventional colour is even better!

The major thing about being able to pull of the grunge look is the attitude. Grunge kids are known for their rebellious personalities. But be yourself. The grunge look is inspired by music and rebellion. But if you're not rebellious, don't try to be. Be yourself. Remember, grunge people believed in just not doing what everyone else was doing. You should be independent and not give a crap about what people want or think of you. Being yourself is key to any kind of look.

Stripes and triangles

Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, and especially, all the cool kids in desperate need of some cool fashion, I present to you yet another outfit from The Lot.

I’m in love with this. Not kidding at all.

The striped leggings, the black army boots, the old school denim jacket, the tribal print, the backpack, the plain-but-still-insane tee, the super trendy glasses – every garment and accessory just fits together. This outfit is one that I would describe as adventurous, defiant and definitely bold. This is not your average person’s style, so it may be a bit too out there for some.

I’m still taken by this look. It’s as if I died and went to fashion heaven.

A heaven where The Lot dresses every kid in its trendy clothing. Major.

And my second set from polyvore, inspired by this outfit from The Lot!
I have a really cool announcement to make! Okay so most of you may already know this, so it’s not exactly new. TOPSHOP opens in Cape Town in April! How cool? It will open in the V&A Waterfront in, as I already mentioned, April, so this leaves less than a month to save up your money. So better get saving. Like now. Yes. Now. This is not a shop that you would want to pass by without notice.
